Recognize “telepressure” and avoid it
That late night or early morning email is a stranded activity. The likely cycle time to the next step in the process will be during the batch processing of email responses by the addressee sometime during the following morning. How is that efficient if the trade-off is less rest?
We sometimes forget that the email is merely the electronic version of notes and memos. They document discussions, agreements, raise questions, or present information. 98% of the time, they are by-products of work and not the work itself.
For managers, the better way to a more efficient work life is to focus on those time-consuming meetings: Make sure that there is a well thought out, well communicated agenda, ensure all invitees are prepared, stick to the agenda, and always follow the agreed actions through.
